Core Develop UX

In my role as UX Manager at Shopify, I led teams responsible for the Developer Experience for Shopify’s App Developer Platform, specifically the developer workflow spanning across App Access, Configuration, and Deployments where we served developers across the Developer Dashboard and CLI surfaces.

At Shopify, the UX practice spans product designers, content designers, and design prototypers, and I had the opportunity to lead a diverse team across all these practices. I spent time building a strong design culture for DevelopUX (a team of 8 UXers), launching new initiatives for the Developer platform, and led the team through a strategy shift towards a platform-first approach that included up-skilling product design ICs to design for a CLI surface, empowering content designers to leverage AI as a co-pilot, and transition a design prototyper into a product design role.

Project proposals & prototypes for teams

A core part of my role as a UX Manager across the 4 squads was to work with Product and Engineering leaders to identify projects and create proposals to get them “funded” with resources. While some projects came as asks from leadership, below is a collection of projects that were initiated by me. My charter was to raise the bar on UX for the Developer Dashboard.

App Platform Changes

The developer platform saw new capabilities and features in Summer 22 Editions, but the bringing these together was a challenge. More importantly, in its current state, it would not be able to scale to support planned features.

App Overview Redesign

The App Overview is the landing site or “home” of the Developer Dashboard for an app developer. The page that sees over ~17k unique developers daily, had not been updated to help developers navigate the highest priority items. The effort focused on creating heuristics that would inform the redesign, and enable other teams to add new information.

Config Experience for Testing

As developers saw that their apps were gaining traction with merchants, they wanted to develop and test their app in safe environments before pushing it to production. I led the team through a concept testing cycle to explore divergent paths to land on an ideal experience for developers to configure and test their apps.

UX Team Culture & Operating Rhythm

I worked to introduce an operating rhythm for a team of 8 UX designers with a focus on feedback and culture; this included introducing critiques, staffing plans, and managing resourcing in collaboration with SLT.

I also evaluated and facilitated the shareout of the team’s quarterly Pulse survey results, ran workshops to address areas of concerns.
